Garage Floor Mats And Covers Are A Nice Touch

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Garage floors harbor dirt, mud and any kind of stain you can think of. Not only do you drive right over them, but a garage is home to the dirtiest things you own, like lawn equipment, chemicals, oil and gas cans. The floor is constantly subjected to heavy vehicles and leaks which shorten its life.

Most homeowners prefer to have a different garage floor surface than the regular concrete floor. You may not want to have a concrete garage floor if you have children since concrete can be dangerous due to its hard and uncomfortably cold exterior. You can upgrade your garage and make it more welcoming by adding your choice of a wide variety of colorful covers and mats. Your garage will be much less dangerous and will actually stay in good shape longer if you add a suitable garage floor mat.

The concrete of your garage floor will be shielded from further wear and tear by using a popular polyvinyl mat. If your garage floor surface is painted, these polyvinyl mats will also protect your floor from scrapes and peeling. It will be very easy for you to find a mat that you like since they come in such a wide variety of styles and colors. In order to make cleaning or moving your mat easier, no adhesives, tapes, or glues are used with these mats.

Since these garage floor mats are waterproof, they will last a very long time and will actually help keep mildew and mold from growing in your garage. Another important fact about these mats and covers is that they are non-slip making them much safer to use. Your garage will be less noisy since garage floor mats and covers absorb sounds just like carpets do. Your garage can be used for a variety of other activities other than just parking your vehicle once it is padded and protected.

Once you’re able to show your significant other how much a garage floor cover can help you, they’ll be sure to agree. Just get it anyway, and watch the look on her face as she sees that you have protected her children from harm, while at the same time made the garage look pristine.

How to Build A Shed

Friday, January 29th, 2010

If a person has many belongings and he does not have enough room in his house to store them, then when is he to do. This question can be answered with the help of an outdoor storage shed.

At first I was a little worried because I have never built any structure like this before, but after doing it I can tell you that it is not that hard. You just need to take care of one detail at a time and soon you will have a great place to clear away all that extra stuff.

Outdoor sheds can be built at the back of the house if there is enough space for one. Sheds must be built on leveled ground so that it stands straight. If the level of the ground is uneven then the shed will shake. So the foundations must be steady so that the shed remains stable.

The stability of the ground and compactness of the soil form important factors. Treated pine, lumber wood and teak wood are good materials for constructing an all-season shed. Once the piers are put in place at equidistant predetermined spots; floor joists are to be made.

When looking for the wood for building the shed, wood with natural resin is recommended so that it doesnt rot. Wood is also a natural material and so a wooden shed does not look out of place in a garden like a metal shed would. Wood can also be easily painted. Any piece of firewood over 8 inches in diameter should be split. Over 50% of the weight in fresh cut wood is moisture.

There is a need for outdoor storage sheds on a large scale. As the number of commodities increases, the demand for outdoor sheds also increases.

Nowadays people dont have to build sheds which are anchored to the ground; they can build portable sheds. This type of sheds are mostly preferred by people who keep on moving from place to place.

That is it. Your shed is ready to be occupied, either for yourselves or your pets or for storage.

Need Storage Space? Consider A Metal Building

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

The addition of a metal building to your property will only add to the value of the property. Many people these days understand the importance and convenience of having a good quality out building. Of all of the out buildings you can add, metal buildings tend to be the most reasonably priced and most durable.

When considering the addition of a metal building to your property you should first think of the size. These buildings come in a wide variety of sizes from very small to very large. Think about what you intend to use the building for. It is always a better idea to build some a bit too big than risk building something a bit too small. Your choice of size will always be somewhat dependant on the available space.

By and large the most common metal building is the typical backyard garden shed. This type of metal building is generally made from aluminum or some other type of painted metal. These sheds tend to less than 100 square feet and fit neatly into a corner of your backyard or at the side of your house. When looking at metal garden sheds, particularly second hand sheds, make sure the metal is either non-corrosive or well painted.

If you have a lot of space you might want to build a larger metal building. Large rounded roof metal buildings are becoming more and more popular. These building range from 16 to 50 feet wide and can come in unlimited lengths. These buildings are extremely durable. They can handle enormous snow load if necessary but are actually built so that snow will easily slide off the building.

The larger metal buildings can serve many purposes. They make excellent storage facilities for items such as RVs and boat. They can also be used as out buildings for such purposes are a wood working shop. These buildings are intended to be wired for electricity and, although they can be difficult to insulate, a wood stove is a great heating option.

Metal buildings are a wise choice for people that are seeking extra secure and sheltered space. The buildings are cheap and extremely durable. If you need to add storage space to your home or business you should serious consider adding a metal building.

Lean To Carports (Single Slope Carports) Pros

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Carports that need to fit properly in a limited space can usually only be a lean to carports which is also called single slope carports or a flat roof carports. When choosing a carport that is attached to your house you might want to consider a single slope carport (lean to carports). If the only practical location for your carport is adjacent to your house or another existing structure such as a storage building then you might find yourself limited in the type of carport you are able to build.

Sometimes multi slope carports don’t work for many reasons. A major reason is appearances. The delineation between house and carport should not be clearly marked or it will look like the carport is not an integral part of your house. You want your home and carport to look as though they blend together as one. A carport that looks glued to the side of your house will not bring any long term satisfaction. Another reason related to functionality of the roof line. If you live in an area that has a great deal of annual snow fall you will want to make sure that the snow or ice will not gather between your house and the carport. In the spring thaw, the runoff melted snow and water will need a clear and direct path to escape to the ground. You do not want the water from the melted ice to puddle against your home. Exposing your masonry work to standing water is an expensive mistake.

Single slope car carports or lean to carports tend to look much more integral to the home than a flat roof carport. The same roofing material can be used for these carports and the pitch of the roof can be matched exactly. Matching the pitch between the two roofs is critical. A slightly different pitch can look off and can detract from the appearance of your home. If you are considering adding a carport that has a roof at a different pitch than the pitch of the roof on your home, take a picture of your current home and make two copies. Make an illustration of a carport addition with the same pitch roof and a carport addition with a different pitch. You will see a difference.

Flat roof carports have one screaming advantage over the other types of carport roofs. The roof of a flat roof carport can be used as a screened in porch or a deck. An experienced contractor could probably do the job in one day. In order to support a deck or any type of second story the supporting posts of the carport would need to carry extra load. There are specific formulas for determining load and how much support those loads would need. An experienced contractor would be able to help you. Using the roof as a deck or even the base for a second story addition is made easier if there is a pre-existing window looking over the carport. Changing this window into a doorway is a fairly inexpensive and easy proposition.

You don’t need to make the roof into a deck right away. Perhaps you don’t have the money to make a deck this year. If you think you might consider utilizing the top of the flat roof in the future then you need to calculate the potential load and build the supporting posts accordingly.

Think seriously about what type of carport roof is suitable for your purposes, suitable for your location, and suitable for the existing house. A little fore-thought will make your decision even better. You may be happiest with a lean to carport or a single slope carport.

Reasons To Seal Your Garage Floor

Monday, December 7th, 2009

If you want to upgrade your garage, one way to do it is to look at all the different ways to improve the flooring. Most garage floors are made of concrete and often the concrete starts to crack after a year or two.

There are more than a few options when it comes to protecting your garage floors. Some of those options are covering it with a mat, sealing it, putting vinyl over it, or you can finish it with other substances. Many people want to do something with their garage floors to both protect them and to make them look better as well.

If you seal your garage floor, you will be protecting it from all the dirt, water, oil, and other substances that will find themselves on it. One of the best reasons to use a sealer is that it will help keep water and moisture out which can do serious damage over time. It also does a great job of protecting the floor from things like rock salt that your car will drag in with it every night. For anyone interested in maintaining their garage, sealing it should be a big consideration.

Using a mat is probably the easiest and most popular method of improving your garage floor. The reasons to consider using a mat is that they are so much easier to install than sealing your floor or finishing it with some other material. The simplest mat is one that is just slightly bigger than your car and it would be under your car and catch all the rain, dirt, and snow your car drags in. You can then periodically clean the mat and thus the garage floor stays clean. Other mats can be bought and cut to the specific size of your garage or any other size you desire. Garage mats are the cheapest and quickest way to protect your garage floors.

Garages are dirty and your car brings in with it lots of harmful dirt and other substances. People want to protect the floor so that their garage looks better and lasts longer as well. If you do choose to finish your garage floor, it will add value to your home as well as protect it from all the harsh elements that are brought in throughout the year.

Do It Yourself Plans for Building a Storage Shed

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Selecting plans for building a storage shed can be very challenging. There are many plans available in stores, books, and on websites. Selecting the best plans for your needs will take some planning and preparation before committing. By making the proper preparations, you will also know if you need to enlist assistance for the build.

A person may want a shed that holds tools. If this is the case, they will want to build a shed that has head room and space for both tools and a workbench. In some cases these sheds also have electrical outlets installed so that equipment can be used during the winter. Perhaps the shed will be used for storing bicycles or garden equipment. These sheds must be built so that you can get to the back of the shed easily to retrieve items.

If you find out your shed will need to be more than 200 square feet, contact your local government office. In some areas a person needs a building permit for any structure that is 200 square feet in size. This may not seem very important when you are thinking about building the shed, but the resale value of your home can be significantly impacted if you have structures on your property that were not built using a required permit.

An important step before choosing where to put your shed is to call the utility and cable companies. Having lines, cables, and pipe locations identified before you start your shed will save time. You do not want to build your shed over any objects that may have to be dug up at a later day. Even “light” sheds are difficult to move so taking this precaution will be very cost effective and will ultimately save time.

Locating the shed in the highest part of your yard will keep water from running into the floor of the shed. You will also want to make sure that you angle away from heavy wind and rain.

Deciding on the flooring for your shed will also be an important consideration. The flooring of sheds is normally made from a concrete slab or by using skids. Skids are 4″x4″x8′ lumber that is placed on solid concrete blocks. When using skids it is important that the blocks are level and the lumber is also level and evenly spaced across the floor of your shed.

If you live in a wet climate or an area where there is run-off and are going to use skids, you will want to take an extra safety step. Putting 2-4″ of gravel in the area where you are putting your blocks and skids will keep the water from causing damage to your shed. Using pressure treated wood will also help with keeping insects and water damage from occurring.

When you order your plans, make sure that they use low maintenance materials in the building. You will save a lot of time and effort if you don’t have to worry about maintaining the shed on a regular basis. Instead of cedar for example, use PVC timber which will not have to be painted each year.

Is A Wooden Gazebo For You?

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Gazebos have been around for thousands of years and can be traced as far back as ancient Egypt, 5000 years ago. But it took until the mid 1800’s for them to become popular in the US.

Ever since then, gazebos have been going in and out of popularity. Sometimes being seen as a status symbol, only to be outranked by some new status symbol such as the large porches that became popular at the turn of the last century, and again in the 1940’s when large patios were the current rage.

During the 1980’s the Gazebo fever came back strongly, and have been on an upswing since then. The multitude of designs and materials and blueprints along with ready made gazebo kits can make deciding on a gazebo a fun and exciting journey.

Gazebos are most commonly constructed of wood or vinyl. Metal and plastic glass is sometimes used. Bamboo is another material. The gazebos can be open or closed with ornate 2 tiered roofs, with elaborate wood work adorning the entire structure.

Take your time browsing the available gazebos. Or the available blue prints if you have decided to do the construction from scratch. What works with your garden, and your style? An elegant or rustic gazebo? Ornate with intricate design and beautiful details? Or plain and rustic?

So, you see, there are a lot of details you need to work out before you make a final decision on design. Will you construct a concrete floor, or make a wooden pad for the gazebo? Will you want a chimney to add a fireplace for chilly evenings? (Think roasted marshmallows and toddy)The only limit is your imagination. A garden gazebo will bring pleasure and beauty for your garden for many years to come.

Plastic, Metal or Wooden Sheds - Help For Your Decision

Monday, October 26th, 2009

If you are trying to decide whether to purchase plastic, metal or wooden sheds, there are quite a few considerations to keep in mind. Aside from the overall costs, we will be looking at three basic categories. They are: durability; flexibility; and appearance.

Durability

Plastic and metal sheds are both durable products and last a long time. Exposure to heat can take its toll on plastic (vinyl) over time. Likewise, metal sheds can get blistering hot in warmer climates. Wooden sheds can be damaged if overexposed to sunlight and heat but if the wood is treated, this will help the shed last for years. All three types of materials can be painted which is a real plus.

One of the negative aspects of metal is that it can be dented pretty easily since the metal is thin. This doesn’t make for a pretty site if there are a few good sized dents in the walls of your shed. On the other hand, wooden sheds can be easily repaired if nicked or dented simply by filling in with wood filler and painting. Since wooden sheds are framed the same way that larger structures are, such as a house, they are quite sturdy and can handle extreme weather conditions.

Freedom With Wood

It can definitely be overwhelming when you start to shop for sheds simply because there are so many choices. All of these shed types - whether they are metal, plastic or wood, come in many different styles and sizes. Perhaps the biggest advantage of using wood over the other two materials is that you are able to construct a custom shed from scratch.

There are hundreds of shed plans online that you can purchase and download for minimal cost. This is a great starting point for those who have some basic carpentry skills. You can even alter your plans to fit your particular needs. For instance, if you need to fit a riding mower and a snow mobile in your shed and you need to add extra room to accommodate both of them, simply add on the extra space while your building.

How Your Shed Looks

There really is no comparison when it comes to the appearance of wooden sheds. Particularly, if the shed is made from cedar, you can take advantage of its natural beauty by simply using a good quality stain or water sealer. You’ll want to place your shed in a spot where it is easily seen from your house as opposed to metal or plastic sheds that are better placed off to the side of the house or further away from view.

Garden Tool Shed for All Your Needs

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

Planning correctly will allow you to have a garden tool shed which is organized and arranged in such a manner that you can easily retrieve the tools that you need.

The following tips can help you to organize a messy garden tool shed.

What do you really need in your garden tool shed? It seems as if we end up storing almost everything in the shed. It may be mechanical devices such as weed eaters or workshop tools. We store paints and chemicals. In very short order, we can have a real mess. By making a list of the things that actually belong in the tool shed, you can find a configuration that is most convenient for you.

A garden shed is the ideal place to store bulky large pieces of equipment used in the garden and lawn, including lawn mowers. You do not want to constantly have to move those bulky pieces of machinery to get to the smaller items. Things that are used frequently need to be stored close to the entrance. Sheds that have both front and back doors give easier access to all the tools.

Divide your shed into storage zones. Build partitions if necessary to separate the kids toys from your tools. Add bins, shelves and hooks to give homes to everything. Many times you will have adequate supplies at home to improvise this organization, but if not, purchase these items at you home improvement store.

If there is equipment or toxic chemicals in the garden tool shed, keep the shed locked, especially if there are children in your home. If locking is not an option, install cupboards that can be locked to store the dangerous chemicals.

Garden tool sheds require regular cleaning. Choose a date you will remember, such as the first day of spring to clean the shed and throw away gadgets that are not used or household items that are broken. Regular cleaning makes it easier to find the things you do need and helps to keep the shed organized.

Shovels and rakes need to be stored up off the floor. Standing them in a corner takes more room but hanging them on hooks makes more floor space that is often needed. Check for hooks to store these tools at your local hardware store.

If your garden tool shed is organized, you will be able to find any tool that you need when they are needed.

Choosing A Carport Or A Garage

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

I need something to keep my cars in. I just bought a house, and unfortunately it came without any storage buildings - no two car garage, no carport, not even a carport cover. I don’t regret buying the house, since we got a good deal. At the time we bought, I even said we are saving enough money to build a nice garage with the money we saved off our original budget. However, I am trying to decide if a carport will be sufficient, which will save us even more money.

Now that we have moved in we have approximately 2 months to get the construction done before the snow flies. Of course 2 months is plenty of time to build such a structure but we have to make some important decisions before we can break ground.

The first and most important decision to make is whether the new structure will be a carport or a garage. I can see the pros and cons with types of vehicle shelter. When it comes down to it we are deciding whether the structure will be with walls and a door or without walls and a door. My wife is leaning towards having a garage while I am content with a carport.

A carport would be easier and cheaper to build. Either structure will prompt a property re-assessment and a property tax hike but the addition of a carport has a lesser value to the Ministry and therefore will result in a lesser tax hike. Maybe not a big deal in the short term but definitely will add up to bigger dollars in the longer term at the time we get ready to retire. I also think, selfishly, carport attract less clutter and therefore will be easier to keep clean and tidy.

My wife is drawn to the security of the garage. She likes the idea that her car and its contents are secure but she also likes the idea of storing items like bicycles and Christmas decorations in a secure garage. There will be access from the structure into the house through a side door off the kitchen. She thinks the kitchen will be too cold if the side door is used to access a carport. She might be right.

Both garages and carports have merit. Both structures would add value and functionality to our house. As I said two months is ample time to build either structure but first we need to decide whether to build a carport or a garage.
