The Moving Experience

by Erin Walker on July 8, 2010

Moving can be fun or it can end up being horrible. For most people, it ends up being the latter. Packing, finishing paperwork, and trying to keep track of hundreds of boxes and pieces of furniture can be frustrating, especially if there’s a deadline to meet. For many people, the hardest part of leaving a house and moving is leaving behind the memories that took place in that home.

Leaving home and starting a new one doesn’t have to be an experience you dread. If it’s the packing you are struggling with, set up little checkpoints to reward yourself and the family when they get to that point. For instance, when the dinning room and kitchen are completely packed up, let the family go out to watch a movie or have ice cream. Or when your daughter’s closet is finally packed, give her some nail polish or something else small.

If you don’t want to spend much money, offer rewards that don’t cost anything. Coupons for getting out of chores, back massages, or having favorite meals made are all good rewards. Then, when you get to the new house, start making new memories. Don’t dwell on the memories you left behind. Throw a party in your new home for just your family, and do something special.

Something else you can do is to start making friends. Get to know your neighbors, don’t wait for them to appear on your doorstep with a casserole in hand, go out and meet them first. There’s nothing like friends to make your house feel like home.

Determine to make the new house a home. One thing to do is make sure your new home is adequately protected. A home security system is one of the best ways to ensure you and your family are safe.
